"I remember well the summer that I conducted my own lateral search. I had been at a firm for a few years and then went in house to an Internet company. The company was on the brink, and I wanted to go back to the "security" of the law firm world. I grabbed a recruiters directory, and spent a night sending my resume to dozens of recruiting firms. I spent the next couple of weeks meeting with various recruiters, and trying to get bottom line information from them on what my options were. My resume was sent to a bunch of firms, and I got a few interviews. On one interview, the hiring partner said the recruiter told him that I had a significant amount of portable business coming with me from the Internet company I was at - I did not have the business and did not get the job. Another interview was for a mid-level securities position, of which I had no experience - I was an IP transactional lawyer. My favorite was the interview with a firm that needed an associate to start the following Monday on a massive deal - the recruiter that sent me there told them I could start right away, knowing that I had to give at least a month's notice to my employer. A great deal of time was wasted, both for me and for the firms I was interviewing at, because the recruiters I used never took the time to understand my experience and the types of firms that I was looking for. When I finally "left the law" to become a recruiter, I joined this firm because it's policies and philosophy are exactly what I would've wanted when I was practicing."

Expect Success!

There is a story that is told about a woman who is bribed to walk across a balance beam that is standing a few feet off of the ground and does it successfully. The beam is then lifted up to 10 feet and the prize money is increased. Although she is hesitant, she goes for it and is again successful. The beam is then lifted up to 20 feet, and the prize money is tripled. She musters up all the strength she has, battles the fear and walks across again. Finally, the beam is lifted up to 50 feet and the prize money is quadrupled. She starts out, wobbles a bit, looks down, and then turns around and steps off the beam. No matter what is said to her, she can't bring herself to do it. "But why?" says the one daring her, "It's the same exact beam you crossed when it was only five feet from the ground."
